Southern Railway (SR) is credited to be the first railway zone that sought establishment in liberated India. On April 14th 1951, Southern Railway was established by combining three state railways including Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway, South Indian Railway and Mysore State Railway. Initially, the Southern Railway was formed when Great Southern India Railway Co. was initiated in Britain (1853). Southern Railway's present network extends over a large area of India's Southern Peninsula, covering the states of Tamilnadu, Kerala, Pondicherry,and a small portion of Andhra Pradesh. Serving these naturally plentiful and culturally rich southern states, the SR extends from Mangalore on the west coast and Kanniyakumari in the south to Renigunta in the North West and Gudur in the North East.

Spheres of activities cover loco engine holdings, outage, loco failures, fuel and lube oil consumption, maintenance schedules, heavy schedule outturn, component inventory, component failures, coach holding, foreign railway coaches, Coach condemnation, wagons, utilization of human resources, Accidents, fright activity and staff trainings.
